New York City native son Matthew Welde has been kicking around Nashville for the past couple of years, writing over a hundred songs in that stretch, while exhibiting his electric guitar work in a variety of sonic settings around Music City. The longtime journeyman musician has collaborated with such heavyweight producers as Oz Fritz and John Agnello; and garnered praise for his songwriting from a cross section of admirers including former Patti Smith guitarist and co-writer Oliver Ray, Dead Meadow frontman Jason Simon, and Sonic Youth producer Jim Waters. After years of splitting time between New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles, he finally saw the light and made his way to the songwriter’s paradise of Nashville, Tennessee, where he can be heard plying his craft at notable hole-in-wall venues like Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge, the 5Spot, Bobby's Idle Hour, the Underdog, and Brown's Diner.
Recent studio collaborations with Miranda Lambert guitarist Ethan Ballinger have yielded a string of singles which will be released, two songs per month, starting in May of 2023. Also out this year; Santa’s Ice Cold Pickers, a side project produced by Hank Williams Jr’s longtime bandleader Mike Daly. Mr. Welde is the founder and musical director of the AVULU project, an ongoing musical event that features a house band, annexed with special guests, in a Last Waltz-style setting; as well as contributions from performance artists, poets and video designers. After years of operating in the shadows and a long and winding road that has included broken hearts and broken guitar strings, a string of odd jobs and the odd night in jail; Matthew Welde seems poised to make a splash around the country after his crash landing in Music City, USA.
